Adult group lessons

We offer adult group classes at three levels as described in the Common European Framework table below. Minimum class size, 2 people. Maximum class size, 8 people. A female Japanese staff is always present in case translation is needed and to serve refreshments. Lessons generally, but not always, follow these formats: Level 3- self introduction, picture speculation, listening comprehension, listen and repeat, grammar pattern practice drills, question and answer, read out aloud, application and feedback. Levels 2 and 1- each person describes their latest news since last week then the group has a question and answer session. Next, each person silent reads an article, containing vocabulary and grammar according to level, and may use a dictionary to find the meaning of new words. Following this the group ask the reader closed questions to try and discover the contents of the articles. Lesson materials are designed to prepare members for EIKEN as well as generate interest and stimulate conversation.

No textbook is required but class members are advised to bring a dictionary and a notebook.

Sunday club

We have a freetalk session most Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm which is generally aimed at adults but occasionally outstanding junior and senior high school students may attend.

The purpose of these sessions depends on the members present on the day. Members may have specific requests including explanation of grammar problems or advice on travel in England. Generally the English club is a place to enjoy speaking English without fear of any corrections by the teacher. The English club is not a lesson and the members are not students, although members may still learn new words and phrases. If the conversation reaches a natural end, the format of Level 2 and 1 classes is used.

Adults taking classes at any level may attend. Although we expect members to speak in English at these sessions, some use of Japanese is perfectly OK. Adults not taking regular classes may also become club members.

Sunday English club tickets are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and are not transferable. However, ticket holders may use more than one ticket by bringing another person or people. To do this they should enquire by email or Facebook message.

Adult home study

EIKEN, IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL

We can help adults to prepare for the first stage of EIKEN at grades 3 and above, IELTS, TOEIC and TOEFL by using email or Facebook message. We send you study materials, and instructions on test taking strategies, to complete at home and return by email. Our staff mark the work and give feedback for improvement. This service is available to students that register with our school as Open Learning Students and who do not attend classes. The service is also available as an extra option to those students that attend classes and desire additional supplementary training.

BASIC MATH AND ARITHMETICS

In the same way as above, we can help you with math and arithmetics.

SCIENCE

We (qualified, experienced, professional scientists) can also help you with research methodology, experiment design, statistical analysis, psychology, and much more.

PRICE

All of the above cost ¥1000/lesson. Minimum contract 4 lessons. For psychology, IELTS, TOEIC and TOEFL students need a textbook, which they buy from a bookstore themselves-we do not sell study materials.

Special courses

Our qualified, professional staff experienced in teaching subjects in schools and colleges in England offer special courses such as English for foreign travel, English for business, use of computers, child development psychology, arithmetics, statistics for social scientists, preparation for specific examinations and more. Students interested in studying more than English conversation at any level from basic to advanced or university level are invited to submit a proposal for us to consider. For prices of these special courses taught at our school in Itsukaichi see the table below.

Special course lessons are 2 hours long. Students may be required to purchase textbooks.

Social events

Occasionally we have social events such as hiking, barbecues and parties. These events are open to students and members of David Price English School who may also bring their family, friends or colleagues. Events held inside the school building are limited to a maximum of 30 people because of limited space. However, we have had up to 40 people attend parties in the past because some left early while others arrived late. These events are always held on a Sunday because most people don't work then.

The events are free. We only ask those wishing to join to bring some food and drinks to share. Some people call these 'potluck' parties but we prefer the term 'bring and share' party. Sometimes we have min-parties limited to a few people for a special purpose.

Sunday cooking

Sometimes we offer a cooking lesson instead of the Sunday freetalk session from 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm which is generally aimed at adults, but interested high school students may attend.

The purpose of these sessions is to learn about the history of traditional British dishes and enjoy cooking and eating them. As these are traditional dishes, units of weights and measures are imperial so we learn how to convert them into metric.

Adults taking classes at any level may attend. Although we hope members use English in cooking class, use of Japanese is entirely okay. Adults not taking any classes may also attend.

As the cooking class is one hour longer than a Sunday chat class and extra electricity and gas costs are incurred, the cost of attending a class is ¥2,500 plus members share the cost of ingredients.
